Aussie Cheer Squad

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

We gathered together tonight to cheer on the Australian team. The word went out a few days ago (I helped out there ; ) that we’d be able to see the whole Olympic team in the one spot if we all went and gathered in a certain spot on the seawall in Yaletown, Vancouver. We made up posters to put up in hostels, sent out multiple emails. Max Madden painted up 30+ signs, got a massive boxing kangaroo flag made up, got boxes and boxes of lamingtons made up, and also got a generator and PA system.

Folks started gathering from 4pm, sharing stories and complimenting each others Australian memorabilia that they were wearing, and many had Aussie flags over their shoulders, showing their colours proudly. It was starting to get dark, and the usual Vancouver weather was rolling in – splattery showery rain, gentle breeze. Nothing could dampen the spirit of the Aussies of course, with a few rousing rounds of Waltzing Matilda and even a smattering of  “Give Me A Home Among The Gum Trees” to be heard.

The Aussies milled around some more. By 6pm, the word came through – they were loading up! They were going to come past on boats, heading for dinner across the water from where we were heading. There would be media on board! Channel 7 were doing the rounds through the crowd, getting close up shots of the punters, cheering and carrying on. They were cursing the dark, preventing any broader shots of the 150+ Australians gathered on the seawall, all craning their necks to catch that first glimpse of the athletes.

“Here they come!” came the cry! Everyone swelled towards the railing. Nope, was just another boat. Everyone went back to chatting and taking the mickey out of Max for his Collingwood jumper. As if you’d wear that out on a public occasion like this?

Then two little boats came around the prow of a massive yacht parked in a marina an made a bee-line directly towards us. “That’s them!” was the cry! It was! Our proud, 40 Olympic athletes and their retainers, were on a couple of tiny sea taxis… not exactly what the Aussies gathered had pictured! Still, the cheering went up, the rounds of Aussie Aussie Aussie went up and down the crowd, and the athletes hung out from the tiny door in the little boats, taking pictures with massive grins on their faces… it was all worth it for that.

They cruised by once, then came back again for another go. The light from the media camera inside one of the boats lighting up its surroundings, all the young athletes crowded to the side of the boat closest to the crowd. Photos back and forth. It’s hard to say which group was more pleased to see the other. It was very special. They headed off to the other shore.

Best of luck in the games guys, make us proud.

Opening Ceremony (full dress rehearsal)

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

I’ve just got back from going to see the final full dress rehearsal of the opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics, and it was pretty amazing stuff! This blog post is going to be pretty boring as I was a good boy and didn’t take (m)any pictures and I can’t actually tell you what happened, but I’ll do my best to entertain you for a moment or two with other stuff that was going on.

Pretty much all the ticket holders for this event were volunteers, or family of volunteers, so there were lots of blue jackets around, and I was amused when the Mayor of Vancouver came on before the event started and thanked the volunteers for making it possible. Then the Premier came on and said his bit, again thanking the volunteers. That was pretty cool. Then the Prime Minister came on and said his thank you’s too, and that was amazing! He’s actually a good public speaker, which is nice.

Anyhoo, lots of good stuff happening during the show… I was lucky enough to get seats about 10 rows back from the stage so had a really close up view of the famous folks that were on stage, got snowed on by both fake snow (real frozen ice stuff, none of this feathery stuff) and paper maple leaves. I kept one of them.

One of the funniest things was that they did the entrance of the athletes, but of course the athletes had prior engagements, so they pulled in stand-ins… off the street! Folks in jeans and Canada branded sweaters mooching in and then waving wildly following the Elbonian flag was pretty funny, and so was the massive crowd representing Team Canada when the majority of the teams got about 3 or 4 people. Of course Team Canada got the biggest cheer, but Australia was up there! I think we ranked about 3 or 4 on the cheering scale.

Getting in wasn’t too much of a trial either. Full metal detectors and waiting in line for about half an hour, but you kind of expect that these days. The security folks said they were looking forward to another 14 days of it… not.

Oh, and they must have held a few things back for tomorrow too, as we didn’t get to see the lighting of the Olympic Flame… be interesting to see how they go about lighting the BBQ!

Also, don’t forget to look out for us in the news (if you’re not in Vancouver) tomorrow night, as the Aussies are planning a bit of a fun cheer squad for the Australian Team ;)

City happenings

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

Things are really starting to ramp up around here for the Olympics. White tents have been popping up like mushrooms, there are Olympics vehicles everywhere and all sorts of special events are happening.

We were mooching through town today when we passed over the top of Robson square, the outdoor ice skating rink in the center of town that I have previously blogged about, and we noticed quite a crowd gathering.

Curious, we went down to check it out and spotted a bunch of figure skaters practising on the ice – pirouettes and all! Turns out they were a local troupe of younger skaters who were “warming” the ice up before a couple of famous figure skaters who won medals 20 years ago came out to be reunited and wave at the assembled 20+ cameras and hundreds of onlookers.

It’s the things like that which make you remember that we have a massive event happening in the city, starting at the end of this week… Wow!

Actually, speaking of white tents, we realized that the one they have been assembling on the carpark in the block next to our building is the Irish House, which should be a tourist oriented place featuring copious quantities of Guiness… I hope!

Granville Island

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

We had a pretty easy day today, being Saturday and all. Went for a wander around Yaletown (where our apartment is) in the morning to get a coffee and have a look through the local book store, and then in the afternoon we had to get out of the apartment as it’s for sale at the moment… bloody pushy bloody real estate lady is getting a bit much.

Anyhoo, we went down to Granville Island to have a look at the markets for some  lunch, and Nat is heading back to Australia for a couple of weeks next week, so she was picking up a few gifts for folks at home.

Granville Island Market

Granville Island is such a nice little spot with a great concentration of interesting shops. Everything from fruit and veg to jewellry, chocolates, pancakes etc. Then in the other more fixed stores scattered around the island you can find a hammock shop, outdoor store, saki distillery and all sorts of fun stuff!

Granville Island Market

If you’re coming for a visit, it’s well worth a look around. If you’re a local, it’s great to just swing by every now and then… we’re guilty of spending a lot of time in the “kids market” which is a place to get all sorts of toys and games from a few different vendors all under the one roof. Not a black market where you can buy small children…

Olympic protest!

Friday, February 5th, 2010

It’s been a busy last couple of days over here in Vancouverland… Aidan & Jen from our next door neighbour blog Ward Travels have arrived and are now taking up space on our couch, and I got involved in organizing a tongue in cheek protest over the IOC wanting to pull down a bloody huge Boxing Kangaroo flag that the Australian Athletes put up in the Vancouver Olympic Village. Here’s a pic of it from this news article by the Courier:

What started off as a quick phone call from a mate, Max Madden, turned into a big phone fest to get folks down to the hot spot at the south end of the Burrard St Bridge at 8am in the morning, emails flying around from various sources, and a hell of a lot of fun being had by a group of Aussies holding up flags, banners and a bright yellow blow up kangaroo. You’re not getting him back by the way Sandra.

We attracted three different TV news crews, a couple of radio reporters and we were even live on CTV morning news at one stage! Here’s the results:

Canadian station Global News (video)

Nine News Australia (video/article)

24 Hours Vancouver (Article, local daily rag)

Plus I think we also made it onto the Today show this morning and a few other spots… it may even make it onto the Aussie evening news!

It’s always interesting trying to pull something like this together… you never know how many people are going to turn up, what the reception will be like, and even what the group will be like. We had a great bunch this morning, everyone getting right into it and we got lots of friendly honks from passers by… well, I hope they were friendly!

One of the funniest things was a Canadian who moseyed along afterwards who had seen us from the car and figured “I’ve got an Australian Terrier (dog), so I’d better grab my dog and come hang out with them!” Genius. Plus the dog really wasn’t sure about the yellow blow up kangaroo we had, so was barking up a hell of a storm at it. I may have been provoking it a little.

If you’re in Vancouver and you want to get in on the Aussie Olympic shenanigans, either sign up on the facebook group, the meetup group, or put up a reply on the forum post… join in, it’s going to be great!

Air strike!

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Wow, so I’ve just been informed that the strange sounding aircraft I’ve been hearing recently in my office, which is near the airport, aren’t passenger jets. They’re FA-18 jetfighters taking off! Nuts!

This security stuff for the Olympics is serious. Better make sure that the rabble raising Aussie Supporters don’t get uppity, or they might bring the strike squadron down on us…!
