Canaussie.com stickers!

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

I’m stoked, I ordered 1000 stickers for canaussie.com last week after agonizing over getting them for months…

They came in today and they’re great! Have already given a few away to disinterested people just cos I wanted to show them off :)

Yes, I think I may be a geek.

Here they are:

If you want some, come see me at an event like the BBQ we’re having on the 31st in Stanley Park. They weatherproof and will look fantastic on your car, snowboard, or wherever else good stickers are stuck.

Mountain Equipment Co-Op (MEC)

Monday, December 21st, 2009

A wondrous playground! A place where you’ll find treasures! A place where you can while away the hours, darting from rack to rack!

Inside Mountain Equipment Co-Op MEC Broadway, Vancouver

Don’t mind me, we’re half way through watching “Where the Wild Things Are”.

Mountain Equipment Co-Op is a chain of co-operative outdoor stores, where basically you have to be a member to buy stuff there, and gear is usually cheaper there. They’ve got stores across Canada, and they’re all very cool.  The good news is that a lifetime membership only costs $5, yes, $5. Not sure if you get a certificate with it, but you do get a card, and your phone number is attached to your account so anyone can then use that phone number to be able to purchase stuff. Not that I’d condone that sort of thing.

Still, it’s a great place to start if you’ve just landed in Vancouver and haven’t got your layers sorted out, or if you’re starting to realise they weren’t kidding when they called it “Brollywood” or the “Lower Rainland”.

We visited the West Broadway store yesterday to pick up some stuff before we head to Mexico on Thursday. Water purification stuff, as well as emergency meals, just in case we get sick of burritos and tacos. Or something.

Here’s the outside, and a quick street view too. This one is on Broadway right near a bunch of other outdoor stores, so if you’re in the mood to sniff Gore-Tex and Polarfleece, this is the area for you!

For the record, it got to a high of +10c over the weekend, quite warm! I’m not kidding, after a week or two of close to zero or less, it’s funny how warm 10 feels. Well, not that warm…

Commercial Drive

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

We had dinner over on Commercial Drive last night before a Christmas Party in the area, which is an area that is an interesting mish-mash (or fusion, if you’re trendy) of cultures. When I was living in Vancouver last time, Commercial Drive was pretty seedy, and lots of homeless people hung around. Now, a lot more families and trendy types have moved in and the Drive has really become a great place to hang out, but there is still some of that seedy element around too, which helps to keep the area edgy.

Here’s a shot from near the place we ate at, and you can see the lights of Grouse Mountain in the background.

Looking north on Commercial Drive near Grandview Park

Commercial Drive would be one of our choice places to live in, as there are great shops and markets there, really cool pubs, bars and restaurants, and it can be quite a nice neighbourhood. Just make sure you don’t leave any valuables in the car.

The other great thing about Commercial Drive is that the residents around there are willing to celebrate just about anything, and the road is actually shut down reasonably regularly for various gatherings and festivals. Last year Nat & I attended the Parade of the Lost Souls, which was a fantastic night… hopefully we can go again next year after they officially took a year off this year.

Buying air travel in NA… Gaaaaaah!

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

We’re off to Mexico this Christmas. Woo hoo!

However, there sheer amount of screw arounds we’ve had to get this trip have been insane. Now I’m all for cheap flights, and I’m sure if we’d booked this through a travel agent, none of this would have happened, however I would still (more…)

Cereal… you don’t need to add sugar!

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Here’s something that really grinds my gears about the food over here… Breakfast cereal! It’s almost impossible to find one that isn’t loaded with sugar or blander than the cardboard boxes that beige comes in.

Here’s a pic from our trip to Safeway this evening… remember I did say I would try to put in pics where ever I could:

Breakfast cereal at safeway on Cambie street... exciting stuff!

In a section that takes up most of one side of an aisle, it’s difficult to find something that won’t make your eyes twitch for the rest of the morning. I was on a search for a good Weetbix substitute and found there was a couple. Something that was pretty close but felt to bits and tasted like poo, and I can’t remember the name of it, and Post Shredded Wheat, which does a reasonable job but is still over processed.

Be careful of the muesli you find over here, as if you ask for that they’ll have no idea. Granola is the closest thing, and it’s mostly toasted and loaded with sugar, but you can find some pretty good muesli substitutes though… I found that the “Maple Nut” granola from Save On Foods was pretty good, as it wasn’t too sugary, and there’s a good raspberry one from a more boutique manufacturer.

While I’m on the subject, Safeway actually has big bags of their own name cereal… it’s cheap, pretty much the same as the name brand stuff (except the corn flakes, they’re a bit more average), and does the job.

Wow, a blog post about cereal… riveting stuff! Tune in, same time, same place tomorrow for more exciting developments as they unfold :)

Drug stores?

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

One of the interesting things in Canada are the “drug stores”, which I guess started out as pharmacies or whatever, but now sell pretty much anything from computer stuff to groceries to white goods and outdoor stuff. They’re good places to get cheap stuff for every day life, particularly if you’re just setting yourself up for a year or two… I picked up a mixer to make a pavlova the other day for $30.

On the other side, you get Canadian Tire, which started off selling auto stuff, and now pretty much meets in the middle with the drug stores at outdoor goods. Again, they’re cheap and good for setting yourself up if your only here for a year or two… most of my tools are from Cambodian Tire ;)

Here’s a snapshot of the London Drugs downtown on Granville st, we braved the chill for a walk this evening and cruised through there looking for some new earphones… btw, it’s supposed to be -3c tonight!

Robson St shopping district

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

So last night Nat felt like she needed a bit of a shop (winter boots for walking to work in!) we went for a bit of a wander through town. At this time of year (we’re three weeks from the winter Solstice, the darkest night of the year) it’s getting dark by 4pm, so everyone seems to go crazy about putting up all sorts of lights. here’s a snap of Robson St:

Robson Street at night in November

Robson Street is the hip shopping area in downtown Vancouver. You’ll find a bunch of cool stores here, and all the trendy types hang out here. Last night I saw an Audi R8 cruising the streets, and a crowd gathered to applaud a Lamborghini Murcielago who managed to reverse park into a tight spot.

Also Robson Square, near Robson and Howe, or the Vancouver Art Gallery, they set up an ice skating rink during the winter – how cool is that! It’s under cover, but open to the air, so you get that awesome winter feel to it. We’ll have to head back there when we have a chance and strap on the skates. Apparently it’s free too!
