Tulum, Mexico

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Following our stay in Mexico we caught the bus down to Tulum, which is about two and a half hours south of Cancun and worlds apart. Western commercialism has crept in, of course, but everything is so much more easy going, and the Gringo/Mexican ratio is much more tolerable.

Here’s the view from our cabana we rented from Papaya Playa, a really nice, earthy resort right on the beach, specializing in simple stick cabanas and beach atmosphere.

Isla Mujeres, Mexico

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

We’re back from Mexico now, and over the next few days I’ll be bringing the blog up to date with some of the stuff we got up to while we’re down there, centered on the main locations we visited. We’ll resume regular Vancouver based transmission after that :)

After hanging out in Cancun like I mentioned last post, we decided to branch out a little and head to Isla Mujeres, a small sand island off the north east coast of the Yucatan peninsula, and reasonably short (or long, if you get the old ferry) trip from Cancun.

We got the old ferry on the way there, and man, did it take it’s sweet time, all the while with the cabin filling up with diesel smoke.

When we got there, it was all worth it, hopping off the boat onto a rikety jetty over a sandy beach, old school market feel on the street, a few bars on the beach, and a beer to cleanse the soul and diesel fumes.

Cancun, Mexico

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

Unless you missed the slight hints that I’ve dropped in a few posts up to now, you would have realized that we are spending Xmas and New Year in Cancun, Mexico, so the next few posts are going to deviate from the normal mooching around Vancouver posts.

I thought I’d tell parts of the story pictorially, so here’s a shot of the frozen inland of north America, just south of Yellowstone National Park.

After a reasonable flight, I had to wait around for Nat’s flight to arrive, so I tucked into a few airport cervesa’s, or beers. When we got to the hotel, we went for a walk and one of the first things we see is a giant pirate ship lit up like a fairground and pumping out Julio inglesias or whatever his name was with a thumping beat. We’re in cancun for sure!

Next day Nat got to drive a local taxi

Vancouver airport skytrain

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

A few months ago they opened a new transit line from Vancouver airport to downtown Vancouver. Called the Canada Line, it’s actually part of the greater Skytrain network that spans three lines, each of which terminates downtown at waterfront station.

The first pic is a happy snap of the airport station this morning, and most Aussies would probably com on the elevated walkway on the right from the international terminal.

Next is a pic of what a new arrival would usually see when on the skytrain heading downtown.

Final pic is my current view as I wait to board my flight to Cancun. Cypress Mountain on the left, Grouse Mountain on the right, with the sunrise touching one of the peaks behind.

Added a current one, just for shits n giggles.

  • About VanAussie Daily

This is a blog written by an Australian currently living in Vancouver, Canada. Intended to show some of the cool and different things about living in Vancouver, it focuses on things you can do around and with reach of Van, the weather, small and big differences, and whatever else I feel like talking about.
Feel free to leave a comment or put in a request. Enjoy my ramblings!

Update: This blog is now not-so-daily following the birth of our twins on 13 weeks early on May 20, so my writing time is both shortened and divided between this blog and one updating folks on their progress. Feel free to check it out if you want :)
