CanAussie Australia Day BBQ

Friday, February 11th, 2011

What a great day this was! We had a BBQ to celebrate Australia day on the Saturday following Australia Day, out in Stanley Park under Ceperley Pavillion near 2nd beach. Now, this may sound like a great place to host an event during summer when it’s warm, but during the winter when it’s cold and miserable outside you really have to wonder…

Still, what’s Australia Day without a BBQ? We had around 25 hardy souls turn up with ages ranging from under 20 to well over 65, and multiple countries too, not just Australian and Canadian!

Of course it rained for much of the day, so we weren’t able to have the usual game of football or cricket, but it was great hanging out with a bunch of other Aussies for the day. We also managed to raise over $100 that has already been donated towards the Queensland flood appeal. A big shout out goes to all those who do donated and the Clancy’s Meat franchisee in Nordel who donated a bunch of snags and patties to keep the BBQ cooking. A big thanks also goes to Brooke who baked 30 lamingtons, all of which disappeared within minutes of the covers being pulled off.

Here’s some happy snaps, courtesy of Anna and Ben,

Squamish Bald Eagles

Saturday, January 1st, 2011

Every year starting in late November and finishing up in early February, hordes of Bald Eagles flock to Sqaumish & Brackendale, which are about an hour north of Vancouver. Flocks. As in sometimes 100′s, sometimes 1000′s with almost 4000 eagles counted in the area in 1994.

So being that I had the week off and it was a glorious blue sky day, we decided to pack the twins into the car and head up there to see what we could see. There was an accident somewhere in the system, so we got stuck in traffic for an hour trying to get into Stanley Park and onto Lions Gate Bridge, but from there it was clear sailing all the way through, apart from a cranky baby stop partway there.

Hey, I even made a timelapse of the trip up for you! I sped up the traffic bit so you don’t have to sit through it…

The place to go is apparently the flood levy in Brackendale, so we loaded up the stroller and cruised along there – Quite a few birds in the trees! Not as many as I had anticipated of course, but here’s a likely character:

Nat saw one much closer than that as we were driving around afterwards, and there was a few wheeling around, but most seemed pretty content hanging out in the trees in a special park that is there just for them. During eagle season there’s always some folks there from the local birdwatching brigade with telescopes set up if you want to get a closer look at the birds. Well worth a look for the small donation they request.

The flood levy:

Of course, being winter and a clear day, it was bloody cold up there. We were rugged up of course, but the boys seemed to object to having been cooped up in the car all morning and decided to get cranky when we’d walked only a little way along the path. Still, we managed to get a couple of nice family shots :)

Then the sun started to go down, so we headed back to the car

From here the day turned into a bit of a average one, including changing a nappy on a gravel roadside where *someone* had managed to get poop all the way up to their socks, necessitating a COMPLETE disrobing and wardrobe change on the side of the road, during which that certain *someone* also decided to evacuate their bladder. They shot most of it out the side of the truck, but also managed to give parts of our truck interior a bit of a golden shower… Then of course we got stuck in traffic for another 2 hours coming back over the bridge due to another accident. Great!

Still, it was really nice to be out in the sun and doing something different, and I’d suggest getting out to see the eagles if you’re on your way through the area to Whistler or wherever, or you don’t have baby twins in tow…

Snow! Downtown!

Saturday, November 20th, 2010

It snowed in Vancouver last night! Only a few centimeters downtown, but still enough to be cool.

Its melting pretty quick downtown, but they got more out in the valley and more is expected in this area over the coming week. Bring it on!

Look out, here it comes

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Well, that’s it – autumn was almost over when winter has just come barging in, brushing past the remaining orange and red leaves, leaving dirty footprints from the door, drinking all the milk we had kept for breakfast and piddling on the couch.

Well, not quite, but it did start snowing briefly yesterday outside my office between torrential rain, then it did that again last night at about midnight. It looked quite cool peeking out our window and seeing the gently falling snow lit up by our streetlamp, the wet streets behind.

The forecast for the coming week is looking pretty chill:

Both Cypress Mountain and Whistler are forecasting to open this weekend, so they’re having a nice early start to the season. It’s going to be funny if we get the snowiest winter ever after the fart in a bottle we had last winter when the Olympics came to town…

Summer

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Ah, summer has finally hit Vancouver :)

Admittedly it is about a month late, but summer does tend to linger a while here. Well, in my mind at least I’ll keep on trying to wear shorts till December, but usually crack in about November or so and go back to jeans.

Anyway, here’s the current 7 day forecast, care of the local version of BOM:

When Vancouver hits this sort of swing you know that summer will be around for a while. Reliable blue sky days, temps close to 30 degrees, and the city just loves it!

We walked home from the skytrain along the seawall from the Yaletown station to our place near GM place and I think half the city was out on their bikes enjoying a trundle along in the sun, while the other half had decided that a picnic on the grass was a good idea. Not that it was crowded of course, there is more than enough seawall to go around.

Here’s a brief happy snap from the walk home, with Science World in the baground and the Athletes Village on the right:

Oh, and you know what made my day the other day? We were walking along the seawall to the left of the above shot, right in the heart of the city, and what did we see on the dock, fooling around and cleaning itself?

Okay, I tried to zoom in a little, but my phone only has a small lens…

Okay, it was a sea otter! One of the coolest animals known to man! They are absolute characters, and this one was fooling about, rolling around and having a grand old time. I was kinda excited… Shame we didn’t have the real camera though.

Warm spring Saturday

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

Here’s a glimpse into our Saturday, told in tilt-shift, a method of making average phone pictures look good through blurring the crap out of them and tweaking the colours… Kinda.

Sophie's Cosmic Cafe

After shopping for maternity stuff on west 4th Avenue, we stopped in for a milkshake at Sophie’s Cosmic Cafe. Well worth checking out and getting a chocolate shake if you’re in the area.

Daisies on Locarno beach

Locarno beach is on the south side of the bay, and has amazing beaches (for Vancouver), logs for hanging out on, and great views of the city… plus lots of daisies :)

Yachts in the bay

Watching the yachts from the base of the pier at the east end of Locarno beach near the sailing squadron.

Standing paddlers

More yachts, plus a standing paddler… there’s lots of folks into this sport in Vancouver, and it’s quite funny to watch them. Most of them stand on the board like they need to go to the toilet – bums out, head cocked forward.

crab fishing from Locarno pier

Lots of folks crab fishing from the end of the pier – they bait the pot, toss it as far out as they can, then repeat. One guy had at least a dozen pots out, orange lines leading out in all directions from his possie on the corner of the pier.

Our balcony on Abbott st, Vancouver

Now we’re back home, hanging out on the balcony. There’s still snow on the mountains in the distance… not that you can see it, the pic’s too damn blurry!

Vancouver Timelapse

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Here’s an absolutely amazing timelapse video of Vancouver, masquerading as a music video for a local Vancouver artist. Some awesome scenery in this one, and gives a feel for what it’s like here sometimes.

Turn it to 1080p, make it full screen and enjoy :)

Driving into the sunrise

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

I’m happy, ‘cos  the sun is now up when I’m driving to work! Well, it’s rising when I leave (typically a bit after 8) and is well and truly up by the time I get to work. Now that we’re past the solstice the days are getting longer and it’s much better for the soul. Here’s a brief happy snap from Oak St Bridge, which is near my work:

Sunrise in mid january, oak st bridge, vancouver

Apologies for all the crap all over the windscreen… it was a spur of the moment thing :)

Now, I’ll be happier when I’m driving home in the daylight too – the sky was just blue on the horizon on my way home tonight… stay tuned for more updates on these important events!

Victoria, BC

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

This is a quick flashback to January 1/2, when (due to various reasons, including cocked up flights) I arrived at the airport in Vancouver then had to quickly bolt home to Yaletown, grab some overnight stuff for Nat and myself, jump in our trusty 4Runner Rusty, and head to the ferry to pick up Nat. Nat was on a direct flight from Cancun to Victoria thanks to a cheap Westjet deal, which was way better than the flights she had originally.

I wanted to get to the 7pm ferry so I’d have plenty of time to piss fart around then pick up Nat from the airport, however that had sold out by the time I got there, and I had to hang out for the 9pm ferry… dang! Here’s my amazingly entertaining view for that period of my life:

ferry lineup at tsawassen

Luckily, I arrived about 10 minutes before she disembarked at about 10.45pm or so, then we hightailed it into Victoria itself to some accommodation that I’d booked a few weeks before through www.hotwire.com, and I’d used their system where they don’t tell you what sort of hotel you got in the end, only the star rating. Lucky, as it turned out to be an amazingly nice hotel, and we got it for about $70 or so! The places name was Inn at Laurel Point, and if you’re heading over there for a weekend their normal rates seemed pretty reasonable and the rooms were really nice.

Here’s our view at night:

Victoria at night from Inn at Laurel Point

And the same one the next day:

Victoria during winter from Inn at Laurel Point

Victoria itself is a pretty nice little town, and “feels” older than Vancouver with lots of really nice old stone buildings. It’s the Capital of BC, so there are parliament buildings, a cool hotel on the water there in the picture and a variety of other interesting stuff. I can see why people would rather live there than Vancouver, as it has much of what Van offers, but with more of a “small town” atmosphere. It’s only an hour and a half on the ferry between the two cities, and you can even get a sea plane between the two if you’re feeling well off :)

We couldn’t hang around on the Sunday morning as we wanted to get back home to clear our heads after the Mexico trip, but I would like to spend more time in Victoria next time we’re over there.

As a side note, the weather here has been abnormally warm of late, hovering around about 8 – 10 degrees C, which isn’t particularly good news for the mountains on the North Shore and the skiing they offer, and Cypress will be hosting some events for the Winter Olympics, so they’ve actually closed early to hoard snow at higher levels in case they need it for the activities they’re putting on. We’ve also been getting buckets of rain… I imagine if it had been colder, say in the negatives, all that rain would have been snow… the city would have been chaos!

Mountain Equipment Co-Op (MEC)

Monday, December 21st, 2009

A wondrous playground! A place where you’ll find treasures! A place where you can while away the hours, darting from rack to rack!

Inside Mountain Equipment Co-Op MEC Broadway, Vancouver

Don’t mind me, we’re half way through watching “Where the Wild Things Are”.

Mountain Equipment Co-Op is a chain of co-operative outdoor stores, where basically you have to be a member to buy stuff there, and gear is usually cheaper there. They’ve got stores across Canada, and they’re all very cool.  The good news is that a lifetime membership only costs $5, yes, $5. Not sure if you get a certificate with it, but you do get a card, and your phone number is attached to your account so anyone can then use that phone number to be able to purchase stuff. Not that I’d condone that sort of thing.

Still, it’s a great place to start if you’ve just landed in Vancouver and haven’t got your layers sorted out, or if you’re starting to realise they weren’t kidding when they called it “Brollywood” or the “Lower Rainland”.

We visited the West Broadway store yesterday to pick up some stuff before we head to Mexico on Thursday. Water purification stuff, as well as emergency meals, just in case we get sick of burritos and tacos. Or something.

Here’s the outside, and a quick street view too. This one is on Broadway right near a bunch of other outdoor stores, so if you’re in the mood to sniff Gore-Tex and Polarfleece, this is the area for you!

For the record, it got to a high of +10c over the weekend, quite warm! I’m not kidding, after a week or two of close to zero or less, it’s funny how warm 10 feels. Well, not that warm…
